Let's Talk About Websites: Behind the Scenes with a WordPress Pro

Designing and building a website for your business can be a daunting task. Whether you decide to DIY the whole project or outsource it to the professionals, there are numerous decisions to be made, the results of which will impact your business and how it’s perceived. In short, it’s a big deal.

Before investing your time, money and energy, you’ll need to get clear on what you want your website to do for you. Will it, for example, enable you to communicate directly with your customers, display products, support inventory, take payments, facilitate online bookings, collect email addresses or even host a member’s group? What will you name it, where will you host it and how do you want it to look – what colours, fonts, imagery should you choose? It’s a long list, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the process.

Enter Stephanie La Torre, the Southern-Italy based, award-winning website developer who founded EGM Management Consultants to help other women who, like her, wanted to work from home and who she knew were grappling with the arduous task of getting their websites from concept to reality.

At a personal level, Stephanie wanted the flexibility a home-based business offers. She, like many of her clients, wanted to enjoy family, life and travel on her own terms. 

Since taking the plunge to start her own consultancy, Stephanie has worked with many other home-based entrepreneurs. She helps start-ups, coaches, consultants and bloggers to create websites and marketing campaigns that provide them with the functionality they need to run their businesses successfully, and that also reflects their values and brand.

I asked Stephanie to share her up to the minute insights:

Dream Believe Create: What are the main issues that women entrepreneurs should be thinking about before sitting down to design their website {or briefing a developer}?

SLT: The top thing you need to be sure about is: what does your website need to do for you? What's its purpose? Are you building a funnel for a course? Are you looking to get discovery calls? Are you selling T-Shirts and caps? Does not matter what it is. It can be anything you want it to be it just needs to have a purpose

That's why when I build a new website with someone I don't even start actually doing anything to their website for the first month. Like literally, for the first four weeks we're making sure that they have a branding board. We're making sure that they have content. We're making sure that their website has a plan and that we map out their funnel. Then once we get the website up, it never works the way they thought it would!

The first few months of your website is testing. Is this the option people really want? Is my target demographic really what I think it is? There’s lots of checking Google Analytics to see, did that really happen the way I thought it would happen?

DBC: What are some major website trends you’re seeing right now?

SLT: I’m seeing a growing trend to prettiness. Aesthetics matter more now. Yes, you must have a functional site, of course, but it has to look good too. It needs to be visually appealing.

I’m also building a lot of funnels. Funnels right now are my fun spot, but they’re complicated. Making a funnel work is about designing but also monitoring, refining and figuring out where things are falling off. At which step of the process are people losing interest? Where are the ‘crickets’ {the silences} in the process? You have to find those, understand what’s not working and fix it. They are definitely a website trend right now.

DBC: You’re a Wordpress pro – why is it your preferred website creation tool?

SLT: It's my preferred tool because I have clients coming to me with different objectives. Some want to build a directory. Some clients want to build a podcast, or a course or a coaching program, or a this and a that. And whatever they want to do, I can do it with Wordpress.

Not only for now, but we can also update and change it in the future. What's really nice about WordPress is even if we start out with just a basic blog, say just to grow an audience for a client, maybe someday they’ll go, you know what, I think I'd like to make a course, or, I think I'd like to start doing live events. When that happens, we can easily add that functionality. That’s because the base, the foundation, is already there. And that's what I love about WordPress. Because switching {content management systems} is not as fun as it sounds!  That process is not easy, which is why I recommend to my clients to go with WordPress from the beginning - and I should explain here, I am talking about the Word Press self-hosted, not the Word Press dot com. You want the one that gets installed with your own private hosting so that you have complete control over your website.

DBC: Any final tips or words of advice?

SLT: My mastermind group and I, we have a rule that we live by; and that is:  if it's 80% perfect, it can go out in the world because we will never get it to 100%. So, just put your work out there.

Also, if things you want aren’t coming to you, it's maybe because deep down you don't believe you're worth it. So just tell yourself you're worth it 10,000 times a day and it'll happen.

And, you can't break a website. You physically cannot break a website.
